Brasov-Simeria Railway Line: Rehabilitation of Sighisoara – Coslariu Section by 3TI Progetti

The Brasov-Simeria railway line, specifically the Sighisoara – Coslariu section, underwent a significant rehabilitation effort under the supervision of 3TI Progetti. This project was a crucial part of the broader Simeria-Brasov Railway, a key component of Paneuropean Corridor IV. This corridor is strategically positioned to facilitate the movement of trains at speeds reaching 160 km/h, enhancing connectivity and efficiency in the transportation network.

Key Characteristics of the Sighisoara – Coslariu Section:

1. Hydraulic Piping and Reinforcement Replacement:
The rehabilitation initiative involved the comprehensive replacement of hydraulic piping and reinforcements across all railway lines within the Sighisoara – Coslariu section. This step was essential to enhance the overall durability and safety of the railway infrastructure.

2. Construction of 33 New Bridges/Viaducts:
A notable aspect of the project was the construction of 33 new bridges and viaducts. These structures play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the railway line, especially when traversing challenging terrains such as rivers, valleys, and uneven landscapes.

3. Tunnels:
The Sighisoara – Coslariu section features two tunnels, measuring 401 meters and 969 meters in length, respectively. Tunnels are essential components of railway infrastructure, and their rehabilitation or construction is crucial for seamless train operations, especially in mountainous regions.

4. Support Works:
Approximately 8 kilometers of support works were undertaken to stabilize and reinforce the railway embankments. These support structures contribute to the overall safety and longevity of the railway line.

5. Manholes:
Over 100 manholes were installed along the section. Manholes are essential for providing access to underground utilities and inspection points, facilitating maintenance and repairs as needed.

6. Rehabilitation of Bridges, Stations, and Stops:
Existing bridges, stations, and stops along the route were rehabilitated to meet modern safety and operational standards. This included structural enhancements and the incorporation of updated technologies to ensure the seamless functioning of these facilities.

7. ERTMS Signalling System Installation:
The installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) signalling system, specifically ERTMS Level 2 combined with GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications for Railways), represents a significant technological upgrade. This advanced signalling system enhances safety, precision, and efficiency in train control and communication.

The successful completion of the rehabilitation project on the Sighisoara – Coslariu section not only contributes to the overall modernization of the Brasov-Simeria railway line but also aligns with the broader goals of improving rail connectivity within the Paneuropean Corridor IV.
